The Purpose of
Newspapers for Knowledge
The purpose of the Newspapers in Education program is to increase literacy, improve reading and writing skills, and contribute to quality education of students by allowing teachers to utilize the newspapers as a low-cost resource to supplement their regular curriculum.
WHAT THE KIDS ARE SAYING
"I really appreciate the papers in my classroom. Usually when I got a paper I just looked at the comics, but Mrs. Gibson taught me how to open it up and really read it, that there are many sections to the paper. I learned how to find the editorial page and I also learned some other things; like how sorry the Falcons are without Michael Vick and what time Sports Center comes on tonight: and that the Patriots are going to the Super Bowl again. The Colts or Cowboys might go because the Colts are (13-1) and the Cowboys are (12-2). I also learned where the classified are located. One day I will place an ad in there." |
Our objective is to place a daily newspaper in the hands of every student in the education system, kindergarten through adult literacy classes.

Research shows that newspaper use in the classroom
- Raises student achievement scores in language arts, social studies and math over those counterparts who only use text books.
- Elevates ready skills by one or more grade levels.
- Increases student awareness of the world and community and has a positive effect on attitudes toward school, community and subject matter.
