Red Cross appears for donations

ALBANY — Monday’s fire that displaced about 90 people has a financial strain on the Southwest Georgia chapter of the Red Cross, a Red Cross spokesman said Tuesday.

“They’re stretching their dollars as best they can,” Brian Fern said. “We’re not a government agency, so we rely on the generosity of the American public.”

Fern said Monday’s fire at Hudson Malone Towers on Flint Avenue required the biggest emergency response from the agency since the floods of 1994 and 1998. The agency helped to provide overnight shelter for 33 individuals Monday night and Fern said he expected a similar number would need help again Tuesday night.

Concerned Southwest Georgia residents can donate to the Red Cross by mailing or dropping off their donation at 500 Pine Ave., Albany, Ga. 31701.

The disaster relief agency provides financial assistance to disaster victims and only takes financial donations, Fern said. Donors can send cash, checks or money orders to the Southwest Georgia chapter, he said.

The Albany chapter provides disaster victims with lodging, food and clothing for their immediate needs.
