APD investigating internet misuse

  • The Albany police chief is weighing whether to demote an officer of misusing Internet access.

ALBANY — A veteran Albany police officer is facing demotion after investigators say they found evidence supporting allegations that he visited adult Web sites on his work computer, authorities said.

Lt. James Jackson, 46, is a 23-year-veteran of the Albany Police Department, APD spokesperson Phyllis Banks said.

On Thursday, Police Chief James Younger issued Jackson a notice of contemplation of demotion to the rank of sergeant, Banks said.

Authorities launched an investigation of Jackson after an anonymous complaint was made charging that Jackson was using his work computer to access adult Web sites, Banks said.

That investigation yielded evidence to suggest that Jackson violated city and department policies, prompting the discipline from Younger, Banks said.

Jackson is assigned to the department’s investigative division. The investigation is ongoing.
