ATLANTA — Herald managing editor Danny Carter was elected Saturday to be a new member of the Georgia Associated Press News Council. He will serve out the remaining year in the term of Ben Holden, executive editor of the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer who is leaving the council.

Charlotte Atkins, editor of the Rome-News Tribune, became council president.

She succeeds Frank Sayles, publisher and editor of The Tifton Gazette, as president of the council, which is the governing body of the Georgia Associated Press Association. Sayles remains on the council. The association comprises daily newspapers that are members of the AP news cooperative.

The council also elected Elizabeth Adams, managing editor of The Augusta Chronicle, as first vice president and Jim Healy, executive editor of the Stateboro Herald, as second vice president.

Re-elected to a new three-year terms as News Council members were: Atkins; Jim Healy, executive editor of the Statesboro Herald; Dwain Walden, publisher and editor of The Moultrie Observer; Angela Tuck, public editor of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution; and Jay Scott, COXnet director of content.

Other News Council members are: J.K. Murphy, publisher of the Gwinnett Daily Post; Andrea Lovejoy, editor of the LaGrange Daily News; Sherrie Marshall, executive editor of The Telegraph in Macon; Jason Winders, executive editor of the Athens Banner-Herald; Norman Baggs, general manager of The Times in Gainesville; Susan Catron, executive editor of the Savannah Morning News; and Kay Harris, managing editor of The Valdosta Daily Times.
