Calhoun High School locked down

  • School officials did not find any evidence supporting rumors of planned school violence, authorities say.

EDISON — School officials briefly locked down Calhoun County High School after receiving tips that students may be planning a fight and that a weapon may be involved, authorities said.

Assistant Superintendent for Finance Harvey Causey said that the lockdown was prompted after concerned citizens notified school officials that rumors were spreading throughout town.

“We received a couple of calls from the community that a student may have brought a weapon to school,” he said. “So, we reacted swiftly and briefly and locked the school down to perform a search and, thankfully, we didn’t find anything.”

By early afternoon, school operations were back to normal, school personnel said.

Causey downplayed the threat but said that, as an administrator, any time there is talk of possible violence, they have a responsibility to take it seriously.

“It’s one of these situations where you have to respond to the threat of violence because you just can’t take the chance of being wrong,” Causey said.

No one was arrested during the lockdown, and no evidence validating the rumors could be found, school officials said.
