Albany woman killed in crash

ALBANY – An Albany woman was killed after investigators say she lost control of her vehicle and crashed into a pine tree early Saturday morning.

Shavone Denise Childs, 28, of Albany, died at the scene of her crash on the 3400 block of Clark Avenue, around 3:30 a.m. Saturday, Dougherty County Coroner Emma Quimbley said.

While investigators are still trying to determine exactly what happened, Quimbley said that Childs' car ran off of the curve and struck a pine tree, cutting it in half. Part of the tree fell on Childs' vehicle.

Quimbley said that initial tests came back negative for drugs or alcohol and that Childs' body will not be taken to the state crime lab in Atlanta because no other people or vehicle's were involved in the crash.

"We aren't sure if she just lost control or fell asleep or what at this point," Quimbley said. "But the investigators with the DCP (Dougherty County Police) are working to figure that out."

First responders first arrived around 3:27 a.m. after a commercial vehicle spotted her headlights in down an embankment. Investigators still aren't sure exactly when the crash occured.
