Man assaulted with pitchfork

  • An Albany man is charged with aggravated assault after being accused of attacking someone with a pitchfork.

ALBANY — A man was injured after being attacked with a pitchfork at an Albany motel Tuesday night, police reports say.

According to police documents, two men got into a scuffle at the Dollar Inn after one threw a beer can at the other’s door and then approached him armed with a pitchfork.

Thornton Smith, 33, told police that Ashley Eugene Evans, 52, threw a 12-ounce can of Busch Light beer at his door, police reports show.

When he opened the door, Smith said that Evans began walking in his direction with a pitchfork. In the ensuing struggle, Smith gained control of the pitchfork and struck Evans in the chest and in the face, police documents show.

Police noted in the report that Evans’ injuries included a laceration to the eye, visible abrasions to both knees and swelling on his forearm.

Evans left the area after the attack and Smith put the pitchfork on his bed, the report said.

Evans told police that he went to Smith’s room because Smith and his family had been calling him a pedophile and that Smith approached him with the pitchfork. Evan said that his injuries were caused when he fell, the report says. Police noted that they could smell a strong odor of alcohol on Evans’ breath.

Both were taken to the Law Enforcement Center for questioning. Evans was booked into the Dougherty County Jail, charged with aggravated assault and was issued a $7,000 bond Wednesday, jail officials said.
