Suspects arrested for stealing basin covers

  • The suspects admitted to taking the catch basin covers from the 700 block of Mobile Avenue, authorities said.

ALBANY — Two Albany teens have been jailed after quick-thinking metal recyclers alerted police to the men who had city catch basin covers inside their car, police officials said.

Tenorris Wright, 19, and Javor Williams, 17, have each been charged with theft by taking and criminal damage to property in the first degree, after an employee of Schnitzer Southeast — an Albany metal recycling company — discovered the men were trying to get money for the suspicious metal, APD Spokesperson Phyllis Banks said.

Last week, public works officials alerted the media to a growing number of stolen manholes and catch basin covers that had gone missing from the area near Mock Road and Clark Avenue. Fourteen lids, valued at $100 each, had been taken over the last month, Banks said.

Around 12:45 p.m. Wednesday, police responded to the company’s Gordon Avenue address after an employee noticed two catch basin covers in the suspect’s cars.

Banks said that both Williams and Wright have admitted to stealing the covers from a location on the 700 block of Mobile Avenue.
