P&G says it will sell off an over-the-counter heat wrap product

ALBANY — Procter & Gamble announced Tuesday it plans to sell ThermaCare, an over-the counter heat wrap which is manufactured at the company’s Albany plant.

Wyeth Consumer Healthcare announced that it has signed an agreement to purchase ThermaCare from P&G. The good news for Albany is that the company plans to maintain the Albany facility in which TermaCare is manufactured and that P&G’s ThermaCare employees will then become Wyeth employees.

Wyeth’s franchise includes the pain reliever Advil. ThermaCare is sold in the United States, Canada, Germany, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Switzerland and Austria.

“Wyeth understands the competitive advantage of doing business in Albany,“ said Andrea Schruijer, vice president of the Albany-Dougherty Economic Development Commission. “More importantly, however, is that Albany ThermaCare employees will retain their jobs in the Good Life City.”

Bobby McKinney, chair and interim president of the EDC, welcomed Wyeth to the local industrial family.

“The city is a base for leading-brand names such as MillerCoors and Procter & Gamble, and Wyeth Consumer Healthcare is another feather in our hat.”

EDC officials say the transaction is expected to close within the next few months.
