AMERICUS — Rev. J. Frank Kirkland, 82, 228 Taylor St., passed away on Tuesday night, April 1, 2008, in Sumter Regional Hospital East. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 P.M. on Friday, April 4, in the First Baptist church of Americus with the Rev. Dr. Robert Whitmire officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery. Active pallbearers will include Broadus Willoughby, Dr. Richard Reese, Bobby Peacock, Gordon Duff, Shaw Fletcher, and Buzzy Smith. among those who are requested to serve as honorary pallbearers are Jack Carroll, Dr. Jim Herron, George Ellis, Butch Killebrew, Rev. Bill Dupree, Dr. Harvey Simpson, Bobby Peacock, Jr., John Lane, Bobby Avant, Larry Smith, Julian Whatley, Jack Busby, Jack Keeling, and Cliff Pilcher.

Born March 7, 1926, in Tattnal Co., Rev. Kirkland was the son of the late Walter Wright Kirkland and Annie Mae Youmans Kirkland. A graduate of Mercer University in Macon and Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City, Mo., he was a retired Baptist minister. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and was pastor emeritus of the Fellowship Baptist Church. He had also served as the pastor of Southern Baptist churches in Fulton, Mo, Carbondale, IL, Calhoun, Mo, Macon, Ga., Winterville, GA. and a field of churches at White Plains, Ga.

The family will receive friends at Hancock Funeral Home from 6-8 P.M. on Thursday, April 3. At other times, friends may call at the family residence on Taylor St.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Venetta McCullough Kirkland of Americus; a daughter, Claire Phillips of Topeka, KS; three sons, Clayton Kirkland and wife Jan of Denver, CO, Gary Kirkland of Kansas City, MO, and Hamilton Kirkland and wife Cathy of Shawnee, KS; a sister, Mrs. Erin Gilbert and husband Jimmy of Barnesville; a brother, Ned Kirkland and wife Pauline of Macon; a sister-in-law, Eloise Kirkland of Douglas; five grandchildren, Rebecca Phillips and Laura Phillips, both of Topeka, KS, Matthew Kirkland and Alexander Kirkland, both of Shawnee, KS and Luke Kirkland of Denver, CO; and several nieces and nephews.
