She was born April 18, 1910 to William Jacob Carver and Margaret Jamison Carver. At the age of seven, Valerie was baptized in Cobb County Georgia. Mrs. Wingate moved to Doerun, GA, where she met and married William Wilson Wingate in 1926. She resided in the Albany area until 2005 when at the time she went to McCormick, South Carolina to reside near her son-in-law and daughter, Joe and Catherine Wingate Gibbons. She was a resident in the McCormick Healthcare Home.

Mrs. Wingate was a homemaker who loves to garden and help with the duties on the farm. She found great joy and pride in the harvest of God’s creations. She was an accomplished seamstress, which was very beneficial in raising 12 children. She was an excellent cook and when she asked for a recipe, she would often respond that she just put all the ingredients together and did not follow a recipe of sorts. She cooked by heart. Her pastors and church friends always looked forward to an invitation to Sunday dinners at the Wingate home. She enjoyed visitors and always insisted they join her for a meal. Wilson and Valerie Wingate were charter members of South Side Baptist Church & Mercedes Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school and was an active member of the Women’s Missionary Group. She led workshops for the Mallory Association. She loved to read her King James Bible. She also loved to sing gospel songs and she played the piano beautifully by ear. Her greatest joys in life were God, her family, her friends, and her plants. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Putney, the VFW, and the Golden Key Club of PPMH. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, William Wilson Wingate Sr., three sons, William Wilson Wingate Jr., Grady Wingate, and Royce Wingate, two son-in- laws, Dick Porter and T.D. Scott, two granddaughters, Nita Ann and Dreama, five siblings, and numerous nieces & nephews.

Survivors include one son, Phillip Wingate (Patti) of Albany; six daughters, Jeanette Porter of Osteen, FL, Joyce Watson (Will) of Atlanta, GA, Catherine Gibbons (Joe) of McCormick, SC, Martha Scott of Sparks, FL, Marjorie McDaniel of Warner Robbins, GA, and Mary Prewett (Brady) of Decatur, AL; one sister, Lillian Kimbrell of Albany; and 37 grandchildren, 74 great grandchildren, and 15 great-great-grandchildren.

Those desiring may make memorials to Gillionville Baptist Church, 4614 Gillionville Road, Albany, GA 31707.
