David Alton Rhodenhiser

FT. GAINES — David Alton Rhodenhiser, a resident of Ft. Gaines, Georgia, died Friday, morning, May 2, 2008, in a Dothan, Alabama hospital. He was 72.

Graveside services will be held at 3:00 P. M. (E.D.T.) today (Sunday, May 4, 2008), in the New Park Cemetery, Ft. Gaines, Georgia, with the Reverend Garth Duke-Barton, Mr. George Hartley and Mr. Mike Hartley officiating. The family will receive friends following the graveside services. Holman-Abbeville Mortuary, Abbeville, Alabama is in charge of funeral arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ft. Gaines Library Fund, Ft. Gaines, GA. 39851.

Mr. Rhodenhiser was born and reared in Macon, Georgia, son of the late Everett Alton Rhodenhiser and Sara Virginia Williams Rhodenhiser. He was a graduate of the University of Georgia, where he received a B. A. Degree in Political Science. Mr. Rhodenhiser lived most of his lifetime in Macon and also lived in Atlanta before moving to Ft. Gaines in 1986. He was a member of the Ft. Gaines United Methodist Church. Mr. Rhodenhiser formerly served as a speech writer for the Jimmy Carter campaign for Governor of Georgia and also in the Carter presidential campaign as a writer and journalist.

Surviving relatives include his wife, Emilie Smith Rhodenhiser of Ft. Gaines, GA.; two daughters, Roxanne Hamilton of Macon, GA. and Cynthia Martinez-Perez of Butler, GA.; a son, Kevin Johnston of Ft. Gaines, GA.; two grandchildren, Lisa Martinez-Perez and Gabrille Wilson.

Maxine York Watkins

TIFTON — Maxine York Watkins, born July 5, 1931 in Marion County, (Guin), Alabama, died peacefully at home on Thursday, May 1, 2008. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 6, 2008, at New River Baptist Church. The Rev. Jason Jones will officiate, with burial to follow in Oakridge Cemetery. Michael Luck, Brannon Burroughs, Grant York, David Brooks, Charles Newell and Mark York will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends on Monday, May 5, 2008, from 6 p.m.-8 p.m. at Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals.

Ms. Watkins was the daughter of James Buck York and Ethel Draper York, both deceased. She was also preceded in death by her beloved son, Duane Kevin Watkins, who died on Saturday, April 26, 2008. She was a retired plant assigner for Southern Bell and a member of New River Baptist Church in Tifton.

Ms. Watkins is survived by Duane’s wife, Crystal Hunt Watkins of Orangeburg, SC; her daughter, Danise Burroughs-German of Albuquerque, NM; her daughter and son-in-law, Renita and Michael Luck of Albany; her grandchildren, Brannon and Sharon Burroughs of Sandy Springs, Audrey Luck of Albany and Kirsten Burroughs-German of Albuquerque, NM; two brothers, DeOttis York and Clifton York; and her twin sister, Essilene York Allgood.

Mama will be missed, but while our hearts ache, our spirits soar with the free assurance of her completeness in Jesus Christ, now and forever.
