Symphony lauds Cinco de Mayo

  • The Albany Symphony Orchestra will perform a Latin-themed concert Saturday night.

ALBANY — The Albany Symphony Orchestra will present “A Classical Cinco de Mayo” this weekend.

The concert will be held 8 p.m. Saturday at the Albany Municipal Auditorium, 200 Pine Ave.

Tickets are $22-$30, depending on location. Student admission is $5.

A fund-raising dinner and pre-concert notes will precede the concert at 5:30 p.m. at San Joe’s Mexican Grill. Admission is $18, and proceeds benefit the symphony.

Saturday’s concert will feature violinist Elena Urioste playing Pablo de Sarasate’s “Fantasy on Bezet’s Carmen” and Ravel’s “Tzigane for Violin and Orchestra.”

Debuting as a soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra at age 13 as a winner of the Albert M. Greenfield Competition, Urioste has performed as a soloist with the Cleveland Orchestra, Boston Pops and the Atlanta, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, New Jersey and Hartford symphonies.

Saturday’s concert will also include Aaron Copeland’s “El Salon Mexico,” which is based on folk tunes, Ravel’s “Rapsodie Espagnole” and Carol Chavez’s “Sinfonia India.”

“Which is based on melodies gathered from native Mexican-Indian folk tunes,” states a symphony news release.
