Club plans 'little' show

  • The South Georgia Bonsai Club will showcase the art of shaping miniature potted plants Saturday.

ALBANY — Plant lovers can get their fill in small proportions this weekend as the South Georgia Bonsai Club holds its Bonsai Show at the Albany Mall, 2601 Dawson Road.

The free exhibition will be held 10 a.m.-4 p.m. in the mall’s center court.

The show will feature bonsai, or miniature versions of plants, developed from native south Georgia trees, shrubs and additional plant specimens.

“There will be around 30 trees,” South Georgia Bonsai Club Vice President Cheryl Bryant said in a recent telephone interview.

The age of plants on display will have a wide variation.

“We’ll have trees anywhere from a year old to 10 years,” Bryant said. “But some will be in excess of 20 years old, and one tree being shown is in excess of 100 years old.”

The event will also feature South Georgia Bonsai Club members conducting styling demonstrations throughout the day.

The organization has been holding a Bonsai Show every other year since forming in 1991.

“The majority of the bonsai trees shown are plant material from the southern area of the United States,” Bryant said, “mostly Georgia and Florida.”

The South Georgia Bonsai Club, which has members in Dougherty and Lee counties, Macon, Bainbridge, Cairo and Americus, meets the third Sunday of each month at Albany Technical College.
