GISA releases '07 football schedules

  • Sherwood Christian Academy will play a GISA achedule again this year.

ALBANY — When the GISA released its composite football schedule Thursday, interest piqued as Sherwood Christian Academy’s was among them.

SCA — one of the smaller ones in GISA Class AAA — had pondered playing a non-region football schedule at one point (the program has a 2-20 record during the past two years), but again the Eagles will begin the season Aug. 31 at Class A Terrell Academy. The next GISA reclassification will occur with the 2008-09 school year.

Instead of wondering where the school will be classified after this school year, Sherwood headmaster Glen Schultz said he is just concentrating on the present.

“We’re not looking beyond this year,” said Schultz. “We just looked at everything, and we felt this was the direction we had to go. We didn’t feel there were any other options that could help our program.”

Outgoing SCA football Jimmy Fields resigned earlier this year to take over the program at GHSA school Whitefield Academy, and newcomer Ted Knapp was hired to replace him in late March.

If the GISA does reclassify the school, which would likely drop Sherwood to Class AA, Schultz said then — and only then — will he decide what to do next.

“We’re not trying to forsee or anything,” said Schultz, giving no credence to one possibility being SCA would move to GHSA. “We’re trying to get ready for the upcoming season and go strong then.”
