Peanuts look to exact revenge on Foxhounds tonight

  • The Aiken Foxhounds' 2-1 series defeat of the Peanuts last week began a downward spiral for South Georgia, which has lost five in a row.

ALBANY — Call it what you want, but even though the Peanuts are tied for first place with the Aiken Foxhounds in the South Coast League standings, as a whole, the Peanuts are in a slump.

After racing out to a 13-1 record to open the season, the Peanuts’ shell has been cracked hard recently, losing five in a row, including being swept by the Macon Music over the weekend and outscored in the series, 22-5.

The downward spiral began last week when the Aiken Foxhounds — who at the time were second place in the SCL standings — came to town for the much anticipated series between No. 1 and No. 2. But after an 11-1 stomping handed out by the Peanuts in the series opener, the Foxhounds responded by taking the final two games in the series and handing South Georgia its first series loss of the season, as well as their first losing streak.

But tonight, the Peanuts get a chance to spoil the Foxhounds’ party in Aiken the same way they did in Albany as South Georgia travels to South Carolina for the first contest in the teams’ second three-game series.

And because the Peanuts (13-6) have lost their last five games, the series against the Foxhounds (13-6) becomes even more of a marquee matchup — the winner of this week’s series will be in sole possession of first place.

Starting the game tonight on the mound will be the Peanuts’ ace, Shannon Wirth, who is undefeated at 4-0.
