Herald sports writer toast of the GSWA

  • Current staff sports writers Scott Chancey and Colin Chmielewski, and former staffer David Hale bring home a pile of GSWA awards.

ALBANY — Three cheers for the Albany Herald sports staff.

The Georgia Sports Writers Association announced its annual awards late Sunday during a  ceremony held at Brookwood High School in Snellville, and The Herald’s crack team of sportswriters cleaned up.

Leading the way in Division II (mid-sized circulation) was former staffer David Hale, who took a total of 10, including five first-place nods. Hale took top top honors in the Best Event Story on Deadline (College Sports); Best Sports News Story on Deadline (College Sports); Best Column; Best Columnist and the Sweepstakes Award, which is given to the best overall story from all categories. Hale’s sweepstakes entry was a column centered on the controversy surrounding the Duke lacrosse team.

Current staff sports writer Scott Chancey, meanwhile, won four GWSA awards, including two for first place. Chancey captured  the top billing for his piece on Jimmie Johnson’s victory during the 2006 Daytona 500 in the category of Best Event Story on Deadline (Pro Sports), as well as first place in the Outdoors Writing category.

And finally, Chmielewski — the newest writer on staff eligible for last year’s awards — also took home four awards, including a first-place commendation for Best Event Story on Deadline (High School Sports).

The honors mark a busy month for Chmielewski, who also won a second-place award from the Georgia Associated Press in late May for a different high school story.

As a whole, the Albany Herald won third place for Best Sunday Sports Section, while the Athens Banner Herald grabbed first, and the Gwinnett Daily Post took second.

In all, The Herald’s sports staff collected 19 awards at this year’s banquet.
