Peanuts get their revenge on Foxhounds

AIKEN, S.C. — Rain fell on the Aiken Foxhounds (14-8) and the South Georgia Peanuts (15-7) for the third consecutive night Wednesday at Roberto Hernandez Stadium, but between the drops the visitors from Albany brought the thunder, pounding the Foxhounds pitching and putting themselves back at the top of the South Coast League standings with a 7-3 victory.

The win gave South Georgia a series win against Aiken, which fell to fourth place in the SCL, behind Bradenton (14-7) and Macon (15-8), which were both idle on Wednesday.

South Georgia found all the offense it needed in the top of the first, scoring three runs on a hit, two errors and a wild pitch, but before the last out of the frame could even be recorded, the rains came down hard causing a one-hour-and-20-minute delay that sent many of the fans heading for shelter.

Things only got worse for the home team after the break for the ‘Hounds.

Another wild pitch scored the fourth run of the game in the top of the third, and the Peanuts put the game away by posting a three-spot on the board in the fifth. Three runs, two hits and another Foxhounds error led to the onslaught, with Jasha Balcom's two-RBI double serving as the big blow.

Down, 7-0, at that point, Aiken posted a mini-rally, started by a Kelly Hunt home run in the bottom of the seventh. A Bradley Key double to deep center off of reliever Pat Ford brought two more to the plate an inning later, pulling the ‘Hounds within four at 7-3. Aiken then had runners at the corners threatening for more, but Ben Bando's grounder to second ended the inning and left Aiken with a four-run deficit.

The Peanuts’ Ja Jones, though, came on to get the final three outs of the game, and the home fans were sent away with frowning faces for the second time in three nights.
