Blazers 12-and-younger shines at Cooperstown

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. — The South Georgia Blazers 12-and-younger baseball team completed play at the American Youth Baseball Hall of Fame Invitational Tournament on Thursday, finishing fifth out of 96 teams.

The Blazers, a team based out of Valdosta and made up of all South Georgia-based players, were led by Leesburg’s Luke Roland, who smacked a team-high nine home runs during the squad’s 10 games played. The Blazers finished undefeated in pool play, and were 9-0 heading into Thursday’s semifinals, but were beaten by Team Rawlings to end the Blazers’ hope at a national title.

Also, Lee County’s Park Flowers and Steve Edwards made the trip with the Blazers, which are coached by Tiger Berard.

“I am very pleased with how things ended up,” Berard said. “The level of competition here is tremendous and we proved (by finishing fifth out of 96 teams) that were as good as anybody here.”

The Blazers won the Georgia state title in 2005, and followed up by winning the Florida state title last season.
