Peanuts near first-half title

  • The Peanuts sweep a doubleheader against the Juice on Thursday, but still are a game short of clinching the first-half title.

ALBANY — The Peanuts’ magic number fell to one Thursday as they took two games from the Bradenton Juice, 6-5 and 4-1, in a doubleheader. South Georgia narrowly missed clinching the South Coast League’s first-half championship when second-place Macon won against Anderson, 9-8, in 11 innings. With a win in either of two games today against Bradenton at Paul Eames — or a Macon loss during Game 2 in its series against Anderson — the Peanuts will clinch the inaugural SCL title.

“We’re in a pretty good position to control our own destiny,” Peanuts manager Wally Backman said. “We’re back doing the little things you have to do to win games.”

South Georgia won an extra-innings slugfest in the first game Thursday after three ties and two lead changes. Both Brandon Woolard and Johnny Washington posted home runs but it was Mike Caruso who went 3-for-5 and drove in both the tying and winning run.

“You don’t like to play extra innings, you don’t like to play doubleheaders, but you do what you have to. You go out there and do everything you can to get the wins,” Backman said.

Pitcher Mike Colacchio scored the win for the Peanuts in Game 2, throwing four innings in the victory. Colacchio allowed three hits, but gave up only one run as he received help from teammates Joey Hooft, Doc Brooks, and Woolard, all of whom recorded two hits each.

Curtis Goodwin, who was signed Thursday, saw action during the doubleheader and made his first appearance as a pinch hitter in the second game.
