Weaver’s no-hitter paces Worth

  • Worth County beats Monroe and Crisp County shuts out Dougherty in their Region 1-AAA openers.

ALBANY — The last time Worth County took the field, Carrie Hathcock shocked Region 1-AAA power Crisp County with a perfect game.

Monday, her pitching-mate Kelly Weaver tossed a no-hitter of her own to bring the Lady Rams one step closer to meeting back up with Crisp in the Region 1-AAA championship.

Weaver’s no-hitter, coupled with a two-run home run by Lakyn Saunders, was plenty for Worth County to get past Monroe 7-0 in the first round of the region tournament.

Elsewhere, Crisp County shut out Dougherty 11-0 in just five innings.

But the story is a sizzling Rams team that hasn’t allowed a hit in two games and now travels to top seed Cairo at 5 p.m. today.

“I’m excited,” coach Russ Beard said. “I think the girls believe in the fact we can play with anybody, especially this time of year in region and working toward the sectional (tournament). Right now is when you want to be playing your best ball; that is happening to us.”

Saunders also added a double along with Audrey Smith for the Worth County offense.

The Lady Rams now will play a Cairo team which beat them both games in the regular season, including a no-hit effort just two weeks prior.

Meanwhile, No. 2 seed Westover will host Crisp County (17-10) at Highland Park.

Westover swapped spots with Crisp after the Worth defeat Thursday.

Ashley Holt earned the win for Crisp Monday, pitching a complete game and striking out 10 without a walk. She also was 3-for-3 with 3 RBI at the plate. Katie Pomirko also contributed two hits and two RBI in the mercy-rule victory.
