Lady Trojans volleyball suffers setback in first round of state

  • The Lee County High volleyball team falls to Northside-Warner Robins in its state-tourney opener.

JONESBORO — The Lee County volleyball team — just in its second year of existence — made strong gains Thursday night during its second trip to the area playoffs.

But in the end, coach Sheri Almond’s bunch found out they still have a little ways to go.

The Lady Trojans fell in the first round to Northside-Warner Robins in three games, losing, 25-21, in the opener, then taking Game 2, 25-12, before dropping the decisive finale, 25-19.

Despite the loss, Almond was proud of how far her girls have come, especially since her team isn’t out of the tournament just yet. Lee plays again Saturday morning in Jonesboro, facing the winner of the game between Forest Park and Mount Zion, which wasn’t over at press time.

“I’m very proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish in just two years,” said Almond, whose team won the Region 1-AAAA title recently, but fell to 20-7 on the season with Thursday’s loss. “We’ve had nothing but support to get this program off the ground and moving in the right direction, and it’s showing.”

Leading the way Thursday for Lee were Breanna Neal (eight kills), Otisshia Burden, (seven kills), Merrit Smith, (17-18 serving), Melinda Vansant (10-10) serving and Melissa Miller (seven assists).
