Bainbridge will have hands full against undefeated Tucker team

  • A perfect 12-0 Tucker team hasn’t given up more than a single touchdown in a game during regulation this season.

ATLANTA — The statistics surrounding the Tucker Tigers are staggering.

Shutouts in their first five games this season. A minuscule 46 points allowed all season. It all adds up to an average final score of 38-7.

But when talking about a team that’s 12-0 and ranked No. 2 in Class AAAA, none of that surprises Bainbridge coach Ricky Woods.

“It’s the quickest defense we’ve seen; I know that,” Woods said. “Of course, they’ve got a lot of good players. They wouldn’t be ranked there if they didn’t.”

The Tigers’ defense is led by linebackers Jonathan Davis and Tristan Carter and cornerback Derrick Harris. On offense, four-star receiver Neiko Lipscomb has made a habit of hooking up with QB Chris Simpson, who accounted for four touchdowns in Tucker’s 56-10 dismantling of Northwest Whitfield last week.

Tucker coach Franklin Stephens’ says his squad is ready for anything Bainbridge brings their way.

“We’ve done the little things better than anybody else,” Stephens said in a story posted on the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Web site.

Tucker is also no stranger to the quarterfinals — the Tigers are making their fifth appearance since 1993 — while this is Bainbridge’s first trip since 1993.

“Nobody’s surprised that they are there,” Woods said. “I think people are surprised that we’re still here. So, that’s a good thing to me. I sort of like that.”
