DWS girls cruise past Tattnall, 56-26

  • Megan Moss’ 15 points lead the Deerfield girls hoops team past Tattnall.

ALBANY —Deerfield-Windsor girls basketball coach Larry Collins wanted to see his team come out with purpose against Tattnall Square on Friday night.

By the time the 56-26 Lady Knights win was over, Collins found a few reasons to complain, but his team’s early purpose wasn’t one of them.

A 19-1 first quarter, spearheaded by a smothering press defense, created an impressive encore for the Deerfield-Windsor girls basketball team, which already beat Tattnall by 49 points earlier this season.

“A 19-1 first quarter — you really can’t fuss with that,” Collins said. “We were ready to play in the beginning.”

The quick start began when the Lady Trojans hit two quick buckets in 19 seconds before Tattnall could even move the ball past half court.

It ended with Megan Moss dominating.

Moss towered over defenders giving nearly five inches to her.

“Every game we play hard,” Moss said. “We wanted to get out early and set the tone.”

Moss set it both early and late. She eventually racked up a game-high 15 points against the undersized Tattnall frontcourt.

While most plays it would have been easy to lob the ball into the 6-foot senior, the Lady Knights offense didn’t only utilize her physical advantage in the fast start.

Dallas Joiner also scored 13, Danielle Glover added eight and Shelby Cosby pitched in six.

“It is all about the team effort,” Moss said. “It is a process. It all depends on who is open and able to score at the opportune time.”

It was the second blowout of the Lady Trojans this season. DWS won, 73-26, in November.

The score didn’t reach the same level as the original meeting. Some of that was due to the improvement of an extremely young Lady Trojans team.

Collins attributed much of that to an uneven effort by his team after the win was all but guaranteed.

“We needed to play more consistently,” said Collins, who rested his starters for much of the fourth quarter. “But it is hard when you get up 19-1.”

The Lady Knights (10-2) will attempt to repeat an earlier win again today when they host First Presbyterian. Deerfield beat FPD 43-32 on Dec. 7.

“We will have to play 32 minutes (today),” Collins said. “We can’t play just the first eight.”

IMPRESSED TO SAY THE LEAST

Collins continued to be impressed with Glover, particularly the way she and Moss worked together Friday.

“I liked Megan and Danielle inside,” he said. “I thought in the second quarter both of them looked hard to get some open looks, they just couldn’t convert.”
