Trojans’ Jones inks with West Georgia

LEESBURG — It was all smiles Wednesday in the media center at Lee County high school as senior safety Will Jones officially signed with West Georgia.

“It feels real good. Recruiting took a little while because we didn’t have a winning season,” Jones said. “I almost had to figure out something else to do with my life until West Georgia came along.”

Jones is set to receive a 75 percent scholarship and a full ride from his sophomore year on if he starts, and has heard from coaches he could see playing time right away — just one of the reasons for his decision.

“It is an up-and-coming program ... and I want to be a part of that,” the 6-foot-1, 185 pound defensive terror said.

Jones, who made the All-Region 1-AAAA First Team this past year, recorded 64 tackles, six for loss, and had three sacks. He was a special teams guru, blocking nine punts and six kicks, scoring a touchdown on one. Henry Jones, his father, was present at the signing and was elated for his son.

“Will is very deserving of this. He is a hardworking student who is dedicated and has his head and heart in football,” the proud father said.

“Even though we had a losing season, he deserved the look.”

Lee County Trojan coach David Johnson was as thrilled as anyone Wednesday.

“It’s always special when you have a player that’s able to play at the next level,” Johnson said. “Will’s a good player and he’s got an opportunity to get a free education, and that’s most important.”

Johnson thinks that Jones can have an early impact on West Georgia by doing the things that set him apart at Lee County.

"He has always had a knack for blocking kicks for us and I think he can go up there and make special teams his first year and possibly be that guy to block kicks for them. He always managed to be in the right place to get a kick block," Johnson said.
