SCA baseball rebounds from loss, beats Crisp

CORDELE — Sherwood Christian Academy coach Jay Flynt saw just what he wanted as the Eagles — which lost their first game of the season — bounced back with a 10-7 win Tuesday at Crisp Academy.

The Eagles had eight hits, highlighted by a Caleb Farmer’s home run in the sixth inning, as well as a solid performance from senior pitcher Conley Short, who struck out seven batters and allowed five hits in 6 2/3 innings, then gave way to John Schramm, who recorded the save with a strikeout.

“We really rose to the occasion and that was great to see,” Flynt said. The Eagles next game will be against Southwest Georgia Academy at home on Saturday.

n Brooks County 14, Baconton Charter 6: The Blazers are in unfamiliar territory — a two game losing streak.

After dropping a region game to Seminole County on Wednesday, the Blazers fell to 13-3 on the season with a 14-6 loss at Brooks County.

Chance Tompkins hit a home run in the losing effort, while Jakie Williams took the loss on the mound.

“We need to go back to doing the things we did earlier in the year,” Baconton coach Bubber Birdsong said.

Tennis

DEERFIELD WINDSOR GIRLS 4, SOUTHLAND 1

The defending Class AAA titlist Lady Knights (11-1, 4-0) were in championship form as No. 1 singles player Sonya Belakhef won without giving up a single set, while No. 2 Sarah Shatz lost only one set in the win.

The lone victory for the Lady Raiders came from Mallory Pinnell, who defeated Lucy Kelley in a tiebreaker.

“We’re armed and ready,” said Deerfield coach Meredith Gruhl, whose team opens the region tournament Monday at Darton. “We want to be back-to-back-to-back state champions.”

SOUTHLAND BOYS 3, DEERFIELD WINDSOR 2

The Raiders defeated the Knights 5-0 the first time this season but this time it was much closer.

For the Raiders, No. 2 Brandon Van and No. 3 Andrew Carroll won singles matches. Their top doubles duo of Tripp Parker and Justin Davis also came away wins.

The Knights got wins from No. 1 singles player Brett Nobles and No. 2 doubles, Akshatt Mehta and Nathan Edwards.

“It could have went either way,” Gruhl said.

Golf

DEERFIELD WINDSOR 305, WESTFIELD 330, SOUTHLAND 345, SHERWOOD CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 380

At Stonebridge Golf Course, Deerfield-Windsor’s Ashton Pellicano earned medalist honors with a 72. T.J. Mitchell carded a 73 and Collin Ho turned in a 75.

“We want to be under 300 as a team,” said Deerfield coach Gordy Gruhl, whose team is the defending Class AAA state champ.

Co-Herald Players of the Year, Southland’s Katharine Fowler shot a 74 to lead her team, while SCA’s Kelly Pearce shot a 77.
