DWS golf crushes 14-team tourney

MACON —The undefeated Deerfield-Windsor golf team, which won the GISA Class AAA state title last season, romped the 14-team field at the Stratford Invitational on Monday with a team score of 301, beating second-place Frederica Academy, which finished with a score of 312.

“We’re playing well right now,” DWS coach Gordy Gruhl said. “Especially T.J. (Mitchell).”

Mitchell, a signee with Georgia, posted the lowest score for the Knights with a 68, followed by a 73 from Ashton Pellicano, a 75 from Collin Ho and 84 by Neal Wethington.

BASEBALL

LEESBURG — Three pitchers for Lee County combined to throw a no-hitter against Houston County for an 8-0 win.

But had Trojans coach Rob Williams been paying a little closer attention, it could’ve just been one man who reaped all the glory.

Justin McCalvin, in his first start of the year, pitched four no-hit innings before Williams yanked him in favor of Taylor Howell, who came in to pitch two scoreless innings. The game was capped by Jeremy Sheffield, who struck out three in the final inning to preserve the unblemished game.

“We didn’t even realize he had a no hitter until we pulled him out,” Williams laughed. “But out game plan coming in was to get him three or four innings and then turn it over to someone else and those other guys needed some work, so we would’ve pulled him anyway.

Easton Glover homered and had four RBI in the win, which put Lee County at 7-7 overall, but more importantly 3-1 in Region 1-AAAA.

SOCCER

ALBANY — The Deerfield girls soccer program beat Stratford Academy for the first time in school history Monday, downing its longtime nemesis, 8-1.

“This could be the turning point for this program,” said DWS coach  Tony Voyles, who team improved to 3-5-1. “And right now, we’re playing as good as we have all year.”
