DWS golf shatters school record, baseball team rolls

ALBANY — Deerfield-Windsor golf history was made at Doublegate Country Club on Thursday.

The Knights shot a team score of 289 — breaking the previous school record of 293 — to defeat Westfield (331), Valwood School (356) and Sherwood Christian Academy (383).

“This is pretty special,” Deerfield coach Gordy Gruhl said. “I’m very proud of them. We’ve had some pretty good Deerfield teams. The nice thing about it is that nobody went really low. We were able to get the school record with four solid scores.”

Collin Ho and T.J. Mitchell led the way with 70s, while Ashton Pellicano carded a 74 and Brad Germany turned in a 75.

Gruhl said Germany’s 75 made the difference.

“This team has flirted with getting really low before,” Gruhl said. “We’ve had rock steady scores from Ho, Mitchell and Pellicano, but we’ve really struggled with that fourth spot. Brad shot an outstanding round.”

The Knights, which won the Class AAA state title last season, next will face Americus-Sumter on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. before Thursday's Region 3-AAA tournament.

Also turning a fine round in preparation for Thursday's region tournament was SCA's Kelly Pearce with a 78.

Deerfield coach Rod Murray said the GISA Region 3-AAA opener was all about pitching.

Starter Justin Lott (4-0) pitched six complete innings, allowed four hits, two runs in the last inning and struck out nine.

With the win, the Knights improved to 9-1 overall.
