Albany Tech hoops lands six signees

  • The second recruiting class for the Albany Tech men’s basketball team is headed by two former Monroe stars and a Herald All-Area forward.

ALBANY — The second recruiting class of the Albany Tech basketball program is building on the first.

Landing a core of six top Southwest Georgia players on Thursday, they appear prepared to take the program to the next level.

Terrell County’s Quintravis Benjamin, Dougherty’s Justin Wimberly, Monroe’s Wilbur Lake and DeJuan Shannon, Seminole County’s Tavius Williams and Wilcox County’s Justin Wilcox all signed on the dotted line.

Benjamin, a Herald first-team All-Area and All-Metro player appears to be the biggest addition, both literally and figuratively. At 6-foot-3, 220 pounds Benjamin brought a powerful inside presence to the Greenwave, who advanced to the Class A Elite Eight.

Shannon, a 2006 graduate of Monroe, signed with Palm Beach Community College last year, after he averaged 16 points a game in his senior season.

Lake graduated with Shannon and was named the school’s athlete of the year.

Wimberly, who averaged nine points a game while starting for Region 1-AAA tournament champion Dougherty this past season, will bring a needed height advantage to Albany Tech with his 6-foot-5 frame.

GILBERT TO THE GULF

Today Monroe senior Dominique Gilbert will sign a letter of intent to play next season for Gulf Coast Community College.

Recovering from an injury which cut her junior season short, Gilbert stormed the girls basketball scene at the season’s midpoint to average more than 20 points and 10 rebounds a game.
