Ramblin’ Wreck rally

AUGUSTA —  Former Georgia Tech golfer Stewart Cink, who was even par Thursday, shot a 3-under 69 Friday to be tied for eighth at 141. The only thing that kept his score from going even lower was a bogey on the par-3 16th.

“Anytime you’re under 70 here, it’s meaningful,” Cink said. “I think those other statistics are mostly coincidental. I don’t think I’ve ever shot lower than 69 on this golf course in my life.”

FOR HIS COUNTRY

If Immelman, a South African, can win the Masters, he could end a downward trend for his native country at the Masters. In three of the past four years, a South African finished runner-up (Retief Goosen 2007, Tim Clark 2006, Ernie Els 2004). Gary Player is the only South African to have claimed the green jacket.

THREE OF A KIND

The pride of Milton (Fla.) High School, Boo Weekley (also a former Abraham Baldwin golfer), Heath Slocum and Bubba Watson (who also played at Georgia) all three made the cut in their first Masters.

Watson is tied for 21st (145), followed by Weekley (tied 29th, 146) and Slocum (tied 40th, 147).
