Westover wins slugfest

SYLVESTER — The ball had no problem traveling in a Region 1-AAA matchup between Westover and Worth County.

It just traveled a little more for the Patriots as they went on to a 16-12 region win.

Kerry Hall and Brandon Lee both had home runs in the fourth as the Patriots batted around and erased a 7-5 Worth County lead with 11 runs.

“They just threw it at our bats,” Westover coach Steve Bowers said. “Our players just stepped up and started playing.”

Lee added another homer and finished with 5 runs batted in. Lance Shernisky also homered for the Patriots, while Buster Jackson doubled for Worth.

Andrew Anderson recorded the win in relief.

Westover (13-6, 3-2) hosts Brooks County at 6 p.m. today.

n Lee County 18, Colquitt County 14: The Trojans were happy to get out of this one with a win.

They committed five errors but produced 18 runs on 19 hits to remedy the porous defense.

Recent West Georgia signee Jeremy Sheffield went 4-for-5 with two RBI and Brian Hegle turned in a four hit performance as well.

“This was a sloppy played game and there wasn’t a lot of enthusiasm,” Lee County coach Rob Williams said. “I’ll take it, particularly when we commit five errors.”

Justin McCalvin (2-1) earned the win. He struck out five in four innings but allowed four runs.

Lee County improved to 10-7 on the season and will play a doubleheader against Thomas County Central at 4:30 p.m.
