No. 1 FSU baseball falls to No. 2 Miami

  • A 10-run sixth inning dooms the No. 1-ranked Florida State baseball team during Game 1 of its three-game series against No. 2 Miami on Friday.

TALLAHASSEE – The sixth inning must have felt like a hurricane — literally — to No. 1 Florida State and former Lee County stars Buster and Jack Posey on Friday night during Game 1 of their pivotal ACC series against Miami.

True to their name,the No. 2 Hurricanes put a quick 10-spot on the board in the sixth inning to wash away a four-run Seminoles lead and pick up an 11-4 win in the first of athree-game ACC series in a battle of No. 1 vs. No. 2.

In the losing effort, FSU offensive leader Buster Posey was 1-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base and a run scored in third inning (which gave the Seminoles a 3-0 lead), while brother Jack struck out in his only at-bat.

The Hurricanes sent 14 batters to the plate in the sixth, recording six hits and two walks, benefitting from three FSU errors.

It marked both the most runs FSU has allowed since May 3, 2004, when Clemson scored 11 runs.

“We had one of those innings that we would like to forget,” Florida State head coach Mike Martin said. “We couldn’t stop the bleeding. You have a four-run lead and you never dream you’re going to give up 10.”

For FSU, it was only the second ACC loss of the season causing it to fall to 17-2 in the conference put the Hurricanes in first place with at 16-1.

The series continues tonight at 7 p.m. in Tallahassee.
