DWS downs rival Southland

AMERICUS —Deerfield-Windsor’s Justin Lott must have thought his eight innings, 11 strikeouts and one run allowed on the mound were not enough.

Because he stepped up in the eighth inning of a 2-2 tie and drove in all three with a bases-loaded triple to give his Knights a 5-2 lead they would not relinquish in a pivotal GISA Region 3-AAA matchup against Southland.

“This is a big region win, big,” Deerfield coach Rod Murray said as his Knights improved to 3-0 in the region and 11-1 overall, while Southland lost its first region contest.

Taking the loss for Southland in a complete-game effort was Will Webb.

DWS hosts Mount de Sales today at 11 a.m.

WESTWOOD 11, FULLINGTON 1 (5)

From looking at the box score, one can deduce that Westwood’s Clark Phelps wanted to go home early.

Phelps struck out seven in five innings and also helped his cause at the plate with two home runs in the 11-1 run-rule win. Lee Jacobs and Tyler Thompson also added homers.

Westwood is now 2-2 in region and will travel to Georgia Christian on Tuesday for their next game.

RANDOLPH-SOUTHERN 14, SGA 13 (8)

Randolph-Southern’s Lee White doubled home the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning to put an end to the GISA Region 3-AA slugfest.

For the Patriots (10-8, 2-4), Michael Ledford totaled three solo shots.

John Floyd belted a grand slam, while Cole Taylor added another homer.

Pacing the Warriors, Chandler Ray had two fall over the fence, while Austin Boyd added another HR.

LEE COUNTY 12-1, TCC 1-13

The Trojans lost for the first time in eight games after beating the Yellow Jackets in Game 1 of a key Region 1-AAAA doubleheader. Lee County now is 6-2 in region and 11-8 overall.

TERRELL ACADEMY 9, TIFTAREA 1

Julie Davis scored five goals to run her tally up to 22 for the season, while Marlee Locke and Morgan Donaldson each netted a pair.

The Lady Eagles improved to 5-0 in Region 1-A and will travel to Brookwood on Tuesday for a chance to clinch the region title. In the last meeting, Terrell Academy won 6-3.

DWS 4, CENTRAL FELLOWSHIP CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 0

That’s five in a row for the Lady Knights, who improved to 5-0 in Region 1-AAA and 6-5-1 for the season.

Lacey Kincheloe recorded three of the four goals and Hope Kitchen tallied the other.

DWS will face a big test Tuesday when they travel to play GISA No. 4 Stratford at 6:30 p.m. The Lady Knights defeated Stratford already.
