DWS rallies to beat FPD in thriller

ALBANY — Trailing by five runs entering his team’s last at bat, Deerfield-Windsor baseball coach Rod Murray felt confident his team would go down swining.

He was right.

The Knights pushed six runs across in the bottom of the seventh inning on Wednesday to pull out a dramatic 15-14 victory against First Presbyterian Day at DWS.

“My heart is pumping still,” Murray said after the game. “It is fun to sit back and watch it in front of you. We found a way to win with team baseball. You got to get 21 outs to win.”

FPD made it to 20.

Down to its last out, Deerfield got a game-tying single from Michael McCrary to pull even at 14 then saw Michael Matthews final hit push the game-winner across and set off a celebration.

It was Matthews’ second game-winning hit of the year against FPD.

Evan Body got the win, but pitching was not the story of the day as FPD collected 19 hits and Deerfield had 12.

“We tip our cap to FPD,” Murray said. “They did a great job of hitting when it counted. It was so much fun to watch the kids compete.”

LEE COUNTY 17, LOWNDES 10

Matt Aldridge picked up his first win on Wednesday.

He has himself to thank for it.

Aldrige helped his own cause in going 3-for-5 at the plate with six RBI including a home run.

He pitched four innings, allowing just two earned runs.

Lee County (12-8) travels for to Americus for a key doubleheader with the Panthers on Friday.

Americus is undefeated in region at home this season, going 4-0.

RANDOLPH SOUTHERN 4, WESTWOOD 3

Jamie McCook was 3-for-4 with an RBI as Randolph Southern crossed a run in the bottom of the final inning to pull out a 4-3 victory against Westwood on Wednesday.

Matt Fowler earned the win for the Patriots, pitching one inning of shutout baseball with two strikeouts.
