Three Terrell Academy athletes sign scholarships

  • Eagles football players Brad Singletary and Jake Timmerman, along with basketball standout Tonya Horne, all sign college scholarships Tuesday at the school.

DAWSON — A trio of Terrell Academy athletes — Jake Timmerman, Tonya Horne and Brad Singleton — signed college scholarships Tuesday, but they won’t be going too far.

Staying closest to home is Singleton, a 6-foot-3, 300-pound offensive and defensive tackle signed with Albany State University and coach Mike White.

And his route to the Rams came via a current player: kicker Patrick Cuff, who coached the one-loss Lady Eagles soccer team.

“Coach White had heard of me, but coach Cuff kind of sold me to him,” said Singleton, who was part of the Eagles’ Final Four team last season, as well as a GISA South All Region selection. “And when they offered, I was so excited.”

He hopes to compete right away to prepare for a starting job.

“I’m not sure whether I’ll play offense or defense,” Singleton said. “I talked to coach White about defensive tackle, but there was also some mention of me playing center.”

Meanwhile, Timmerman, a 6-3, 275-pound OT/DT signed with Huntingdon College in Montgomery,Ala. Timmerman also was on the Eagles’ Class AA Final Four team last year and was a GISA South All Region team selection in 2007.

And last but not least, Horne, a 5-6 point guard for the 2007 and 2008 GISA State Runner-up Lady Eagles, signed with Andrew College. Horne was a two-year starter for the Lady Eagles and honorable mention All-Region in 2007 and 2008.

Singleton said it was a proud day Tuesday for Terrell Academy.

“(Terrell Academy) doesn’t produce a lot of scholarship athletes,” he began, “and it’s exciting because this year we could have six or seven.”
