Skinner to miss Arkansas event

VALDOSTA — After missing the cut Friday at the Nationwide Tour’s South Georgia Classic, River Pointe Golf Club pro Sonny Skinner planned to take next week’s Arkansas event off, citing a nagging injury.

“I have a little tendinitis in my right elbow,” the 47-year-old Skinner said. “(Plus) I’ve been playing a lot lately the last three weeks.”

Skinner’s first Tour event of the year ended April 20 at Athens, where he scored a 6-under-par 66 in the final round and moved up more than 40 spots to finish tied for 18th. He missed the cut in his home state of Virginia last weekend. This week, Skinner was at even par after the first round but a triple bogey along the front nine was difficult to recover from.

Skinner said he plans to resume Nationwide play after that in Greenville, S.C., Maryland and possibly Chicago.

GOOD SIGN

The second-round leader in Nationwide events have won twice in eight tournaments this year. The leader this week, after Friday, is Bryan DeCorso, who scored a 69 and is at 137 overall, two strokes better than second-place Marco Dawson and David Miller.

DeCorso has yet to win a Nation-wide event this year and posted a career-best finish of tied for fourth in Virginia last weekend.

“You just want to keep putting yourself in position to win golf tournaments,” DeCorso said. “Eventually, you’re going to knock that door down.”

UNABLE TO DEFEND

Defending South Georgia Classic champion John Kimbell missed the cut with a two-day total of 149.

BOGEY-FREE

Three golfers finished Friday’s round without bogeys. Keith Nolan (148, missed cut) parred each of his 18 holes, and Dawson and Scott Parel (140, T-4th) carded second-round scores of 68.
