Cavs advance in thriller

  • Roscoe Walls’ first homr run of the year, in the bottom of the ninth, ties Abraham Baldwin, settingthe stage for a 12-11 victory, capping off a doubleheader sweep by Darton needed to win the region play-in series.

ALBANY — Darton College baseball coach Glenn Eames had no idea of the moment that was about to happen.

His team had to win two games Sunday, and had already won, 8-6, against Abraham Baldwin. In the second game, his team was down, 11-10, in the bottom of the ninth and he entered Roscoe Walls as a pinch-hitter looking for maybe a hit jumpstart the inning.

Instead, he hit his first home run of the year to tie the game, and the Cavaliers’ Trent Dooly doubled in the winning run and the Cavaliers advance to this weekend’s region tournament at South Georgia College.

“It was a relief,” Eames said of Walls’ home run. “It was just one of those things. This was such a thrilling game. Every game was. We had our chances to put things away, and there were other times where we could have just lied down.

“But we kept playing and didn’t give up.”
