ABAC basketball coach Sheppard decides to resign

TIFTON — Abraham Baldwin men’s basketball coach Todd Sheppard told The Herald on Tuesday he resigned Tuesday to take a surgical consultant job May 15.

Sheppard, who coached the Stallions to a school-record 27 wins and No. 11 ranking at the end of the 2006-07 season, had a 93-64 record as head coach there. He also was Region XVII’s Coach of the Year that season.

“It was a very difficult decision to leave coaching because coaching is a big part of who I am,” Sheppard said. “I really enjoyed the interaction with the players and family I have gotten to know over the 18 years but felt it was the right thing to do for my family at this time.”

Sheppard said no replacement has been named and he doesn’t have any recommendations.

“I think the program is in great shape, it’s a good time for basketball so think they’ll have a large pool of applicants,” Sheppard said. “We’ve signed some good players for next year and there are a lot of players coming back. It’s a good situation for the next guy.”
