Ex-Wildcats QB Bryant named to AFL’s All-Rookie Team

  • Former South Georgia QB D. Bryant is the first ex-Wildcat to earn the honor.

CHICAGO — One year after leading the South Georgia Wildcats to their first playoff berth in franchise history, quarterback D. Bryant proved he can lead a team on the next level as well.

On Tuesday the AFL announced Bryant as a member of the 2008 All-Rookie Team.

Bryant’s first season with the Kansas City Brigade ended this past week as the team finished 3-13 and missed the playoffs.

However, Bryant took over in Week 4 and led the Brigade to all three wins.

He finished with 2,340 passing yards, 40 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

He also ran for 149 yards and 12 touchdowns.

While with South Georgia in 2007, Bryant threw a franchise-record 102 touchdown passes as the Wildcats went 11-7 and lost to the eventual ArenaCup Champion Tulsa Talons in the second round of the playoffs.

“He’s the first South Georgia Wildcat to win an award in the AFL,” Wildcats General Manager Darren McPhail said. “Obviously, we are proud of him and excited for him. And the numbers he put up last year it is something we feel like he deserves.”
