Bittersweet Saturday one of the good ones
0 Comments
Last Updated: 9:32 PM 03/09/10 - In the early-morning cool of Saturday’s perfect Southwest Georgia day, the gathering along the Flint River at Albany’s Riverfront Park is subdued. They’re waiting ... waiting for the first of some 1,500 runners in the Snickers Marathon Energy Bar Marathon and Half-Marathon to start trickling in. The thing about Saturday’s gathering, the largest in the four years of the event, is that this year he’s flying solo. His wife Sara, who was instrumental in making the Snickers Marathon a reality, had left him to the task when her long fight against non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma — a form of cancer — ended in July of last year. - Carlton Fletcher, metro editor (Full Story) |

Zealots try to re-create America in their image

Last Updated: 11:28 PM 03/06/10 - One of the byproducts of writing this column is that I get lots of feedback from readers. One reader sent me this the other day: “Time permitting, please consider an in-depth study to determine just who are the ‘REAL AMERICANS’ that politicians continue to refer to in poll results. Is it the native Indian, the conservative, the blue dog Democrat, the Republican or the ‘solid South’ as a whole?” Perhaps it is time to have a space on the ballots to designate if one is a ‘real’ American. Should those who are not real Americans be allowed to vote? Should they be treated as aliens, illegal or otherwise?” While I admit I haven’t done a lot of research on this topic, I do have what I think is a pretty good take on who the “real Americans” are we’re hearing so much about these days. - Carlton Fletcher, metro editor (Full Story) |

It’s kinda chilly for boys of summer

Last Updated: 9:04 PM 02/27/10 - When did the boys of summer become the boys of mid-winter? After watching a group of Little Leaguers play a scrimmage game the other night in sub-40-degree temperatures, their movements hampered — to say the least — by the three and four layers of clothes they wore, I asked myself if there was some move afoot I hadn’t heard about to push for baseball to be added to the Winter Olympics. - Carlton Fletcher, metro editor (Full Story) |

Bad role should be gold for Bridges

Last Updated: 12:02 AM 02/24/10 - Forget all the blue creatures flying on computer-generated dragons, the veteran actors portraying world leaders, the Hollywood favorites whose charm carries them far during awards season. This year’s Best Actor Oscar belongs to Jeff Bridges. - Carlton Fletcher, metro editor (Full Story) |

Anti-abortion ad has nothing to do with football

Last Updated: 11:36 PM 02/06/10 - Amid all the Super Bowl hype — and, yes, NFL, I am using the words “Super” and “Bowl” in a sentence despite your threat that those who dare not call this contest “THE BIG GAME” do so under risk of the wrath of the football Gestapo — much has been written about the costly ads (this year’s price tag: $2.5 million to $2.8 million for 30 seconds) that are as anticipated by some as the game itself. Let’s get our priorities straight, folks

Last Updated: 12:13 AM 02/21/10 - When we try and figure out where we went wrong around here, this might be a good place to start:— We howl in dismay when our favorite sports team offers one of its star players only $8 million when he was asking for $12 million, but when a police officer asks for a wage decent enough to feed his young family, we’re appalled at his greed. Terror trials deserve a proper venue

Last Updated: 12:31 AM 02/03/10 - New York City was to have been the site of the trials, but that city’s mayor said expected costs, security and traffic issues had led to a Big Apple change of heart. Down South, we never really gave the folks of New York City high marks for testicular fortitude anyway, and more than a few good ole boys down this way have hinted that NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg and his folks just don’t have what it takes to make sure those terrorists get what’s coming to ... er, that is, a fair trial. Here then, a few suggested alternate locations for the planned terrorist trials.... - Carlton Fletcher, metro editor (Full Story) |

United? Oh please, give me a break

Last Updated: 4:22 PM 01/25/10 - I find it laughable that we still call this country the “United” States of America. We’re about as united as a puff of smoke in a windstorm. How can we call ourselves “united” when our governing bodies and their sheeplike followers divide themselves strictly along party affiliation lines and refuse to take any stand that does not fall in lock-step with party dictates? - Carlton Fletcher, metro editor (Full Story) |
