Local GHSA football needs an overhaul
Herald prep football beat writer Paul Dehner Jr. shares his views about why local high school football fans shouldn't hate on GISA schools, but rather question what's wrong with the slump area GHSA programs are mired in.

Britt, that is a good point, though, a consolidation would never happen. For multiple reasons I can't fit into here. Every year I do mix and match players from Westover and Monroe or Albany and Dougherty and wonder how that team would fare in AAAAA. But again, it isn't happening.
One problem is the cannibalization of Albany High by other public schools and by Deerfield and Sherwood. You think Sherwood pulled an 8-3 season out of thin air?
Has there been any talk at all of combining the schools into maybe 2 5A schools? In my opinion as an Albany native and former private school football player, the talent base is split between the 4 schools.
You make some interesting points about the state of football, however the private schools are in the playoffs with kids recruited from public school. Pay your dues and play GHSA. Also the as for population Dougherty was in AAAA in 2004 with a population of about 1200 students, now they have about 750. Sounds like AA to me!
