ALBANY – Darton men’s soccer coach Bart Sasnett was named NJCAA Region XVII’s Men’s Soccer coach of the Year on Friday, marking his third time winning the honor, after also winning it last year at Darton, and then in 2004 as the Andrew men’s coach.
The Cavaliers beat then No. 1-ranked Georgia Perimeter late this regular season, 4-2, but lost, 2-1, in overtime against that same team in the region tournament semifinals. Darton finished this season at 12-4-1.
“To be honest with you, I’d rather have beaten Georgia Perimeter than to have received this award,” said Sasnett, who just finished his third season at Darton. “But I’ll take the award because it is a great honor. We had a team meeting (Thursday) and it went really well. This is a huge springboard to next year.”
Sophomores Sebastian Lara and Stefano Barriga and freshman Matias Aristegui were named First Team All-Region members. The Cavaliers’ Gilbert Ruiz and Anthony Forde were awarded Second Team All-Region honors, and Daniel Cardona and Sebastian Vallejo were recognized as Honorable Mention for the Cavs.
Sebastian Lara ranks No. 1 in the country in assists with 17.
