Preview consideration
Do you have an entertainment event coming to Southwest Georgia that you'd like others to know about?
If so, send your information – the name of the event, phone number and a 2-3 paragraph explanation about it – to SouthView either via e-mail or fax at (229) 888-9357, Attn: Ethan.
Information must be sent to The Herald no later than two weeks prior to the event's start date, but turning in info even earlier is much appreciated. Events could be chosen to be featured in SouthView's weekend preview section, which runs on Wednesdays.

Got a story to tell?
We have a place for you to tell it in The Albany Herald's 9th annual Southwest Georgia Summer Fiction Writing Contest. Here are the rules:
- Three prizes will be awarded in the contest: $250, first place; $150, second place; $100, third place.
- The submission must be an original work of fiction, written by the person submitting it. The writer must have the legal right to publish the piece.
- Only one submission will be accepted per writer for this year's contest.
- This contest is for unpublished writers. Those who have published in book form, novels, collections of stories or nonfiction they have written are ineligible. Submission to and publication in our previous summer fiction contests to do not disqualify a writer from participating this year.
- Employees of Triple Crown Media Inc. and its subsidiaries are ineligible. Former Albany Herald employees are ineligible for one year from the date they left the company. Spouses, immediate family members and companions of Triple Crown Media employees are ineligible.
- The writer must be at least 18 years old and reside in one of the 25 counties in The Herald's circulation area. Resident of the circulation area who are attending college elsewhere or who are serving in the military may enter the competition.
- Use of a pseudonym by the writer will result in disqualification from the contest.
- Submissions become the property of The Albany Herald and will not be returned. The Herald is purchasing publication and promotional rights in awarding cash prizes, but the writer retains all other rights to his or her work. The writer is disqualified if the story is printed, broadcast or electronically posted in another medium before it appears in The Albany Herald.
- In accepting the cash prize, the writer gives The Herald the right to publish the entry in the newspaper and on its internet site, as well as promote it and use the author's photograph, biographical information and interviews in its promotion and publication.
- The Herald reserves the right to edit published pieces.
- Language used in the submission must be fit for publication in a family newspaper.
- Submissions must be 4,000 words or less.
- Submission may be typed (double spaced), e-mailed in a Word or plain text format, or submitted on a compact disc in a Word or plain text format. The e-mail address for the contest is southview@albanyherald.com. The mailing address is 2008 Summer Fiction Contest, C/O Ethan Fowler, The Albany Herald, P.O. Box 48, Albany, Ga. 31702. Submissions may be dropped off at our offices at 126 N. Washington St. They should be clearly marked to the attention of Features Editor Ethan Fowler.
- To be considered, a submission must physically reach The Herald by 5 p.m. May 9, 2008.
- The Herald is not responsible for submissions that are delayed or lost in transit to the newspaper. E-mail submissions that contain computer viruses will be removed and disqualified from consideration.
- Each submission must include a cover page with the writer's name, address and a daytime phone number where the writer can be reached during the week. The writer's last name and phone number should be noted on each page in paper submissions.
- The three winners will be notified by phone when judging is completed. All winners will be notified by June 13, 2008. Once the winners have been notified and judges are satisfied that they meet qualification guidelines, names of the three winners and their photographs will be listed in the SouthView section of The Herald.
- The winning stories are scheduled to appear in the SouthView section in this order: 3rd place, Aug.; 2nd place, Aug. 10; first place, Aug 17. The Herald reserves the right to change the publication date.
- Judges chosen by The Herald will select the winners and all decisions are final.
Failure to comply with any of these rules may result in disqualification.
