ALBANY — Thronateeska Heritage Center, in conjunction with Flint RiverQuarium, will be continuing its tradition of celebrating Halloween in a family-friendly manner.
Meanwhile, Chehaw is hosting seasonal festivities of its own later this month.
Thronateeka’s October includes “Tales from the Grave” at 6 p.m. on Oct. 19 at the Wetherbee Planetarium. Free and open to members of public of all ages, it will feature historian Michael Harper.
Harper, best known for his work in cemeteries, will be discussing one of his more recent research projects. The focus will largely be on Pone’s Aiding Society Cemetery, which was lost for decades before he stumbled onto it, and the story of Harper’s discovery.
Eight days later, Thronateeska and the RiverQuarium, will be carrying on its “seasonal event with an educational twist” in Tricks and Treats. The event will be 5 p.m.-7 p.m. on Oct. 28, and is expected to encourage the science exploration opportunities offered at both facilities.
The anticipated child-friendly atmosphere will include games, crafts, animal encounters and a trail of candy on the Riverfront Park path connecting the two attractions.
Admission for “Tricks and Treats” can be purchased at either location. Members will get in for free, and non-members can get in for $6 with a costume, or $8 without a costume.
Officials said last year that the 2015 event drew in more than 700 people.
Chehaw is also celebrating with its Spooktacular from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Oct. 28 in the zoo plaza. By paying zoo admission, attendees can take advantage of games, prizes, candy, animal enrichment and a costume contest.
At Thronateeska, the month’s festivities began last week with a “spooky science” Toddersaurus, Time celebrated through crafts, stories, experiments and songs, and a Super Slimy Science Saturday where participants were able to make glow-in-the-dark slime.
Thronateeska is located at 100 W. Roosevelt Ave., the RiverQuarium is located at 117 Pine Ave. and Chehaw is at 105 Chehaw Park Road.
