AMERICUS -- Brandon Thompson was arrested on child molestation and statutory rape charges Saturday, a Sumter County Sheriff's Office e-mail received Tuesday stated.
Thompson, 20, of Americus was put in Sumter County Jail, said Sheriff Pete Smith. Thompson's bail amount, if any was set, was not immediately available.
"The case is under investigation," Smith said. "There could be additional charges and suspects in this case."
Deputies began their investigation Thursday, said Matthew Holloway, a Sheriff's Office investigator. By 5 p.m. Saturday, with the help of the Americus Police Department, Thompson was in custody, he added.
"We questioned him, and by 9 p.m. he was booked into jail," Holloway said. "We had leads from the community, and with assistance from Americus police we found him."
No drugs were found with Thompson, and he did not have any weapons. Thompson surrendered without a struggle, Holloway added.
Although there may be gang members involved in the case, Holloway said the case is not gang-related.
A major concern in sexual molestation cases like this one is to safeguard the rights and identities of the victims, Holloway said.
"Sexual victims have rights," he said. "Thompson's victims are safe; that is all we can say."
