ALBANY -- Divers searched the depths of the cold Kinchafoonee Creek's currents where it flows into Lake Chehaw for a second day Friday and came up empty.

The search for Fannie Corley, 77, missing from Lee County since Thursday, was suspended at 5 p.m., said Chuck Mitchell, Albany-Dougherty Search and Rescue commander. The search will resume today at about 8:30 a.m.

Corley, a cancer patient being treated with chemotherapy, disappeared after 6 a.m. from her Baker Street home, Lee County Sheriff Reggie Rachals said.

A family member found Corley's teal 1992 Dodge Dynasty sitting empty on the North Jefferson Street bridge just south of the Lovers Lane Road intersection after 10 a.m. Thursday, a Dougherty County Police Department report stated.

Facing the possibility that Corley could have jumped or fell into the cold water below, a water search was launched. A report of a woman walking south along North Jefferson Street raised hopes that Corley might be found on land.

"So far no one has called in a confirmed report of seeing her," Rachals said. "We still hope that someone will call in, or that someone picked her up and she is safe."

With an Albany Fire Department rescue boat zigging across the swiftly flowing water, divers from the volunteer rescue organization concentrated on other areas starting out with preparations at about 9 a.m. Friday.

Two divers re-entered the 45-degree water at about 10 a.m. One dove in near pilings under the bridge. The other swam through shallow water in a grid-like pattern sectioned off by a yellow rope along the south shore.

Slowly, the divers probed the water and moved downstream.

"We covered about 800 yards down from the bridge today (Friday)," Mitchell said. "We'll start again farther down the lake."
