Grand jury indicts on multiple cases

ALBANY -- A grand jury indicted Kevin Harper, deputy director of the Southwest Georgia Regional Airport, Wednesday on felony theft charges, Dougherty Judicial Circuit District Attorney Gregory Edwards said.

The grand jury also indicted Joshua L. Demery on multiple felony counts in connection with a home invasion.

"Demery could get life in prison," Edwards said. "For the theft by taking, Harper could get 10 years."

Harper, 37, worked as a security guard at Dillards in addition to his airport job, Dougherty County Sheriff's Office Capt. Craig Dodd has said. Acting on a tip from Dillards staff, deputies arrested Harper for stealing $2,000 worth of designer shirts in September.

According to city policy, Harper was suspended with pay until the indictment. Now that the grand jury has indicted Harper, he would lose his pay and, if convicted, his job.

In a violent theft case, Demery, 23, was indicted on 15 counts, including two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of armed robbery, two of burglary and two of false imprisonment, Edwards said.

The indictments against Demery resulted from an arrest after home-invasion robberies in August, Edwards said.

In those robberies, two men invaded a home on the 900 block of Cedar Avenue and another on the 600 block of Sands Drive and demanded money, police reports stated. The thieves flashed guns and pistol-whipped the residents at both homes.

The second thief has yet to be apprehended, Edwards said. The next step for those indicted is to have an arraignment, he added.

At the arraignment, the defendants can plead guilty or not guilty.

Another man facing arraignment is Adrian Lopez Roberts, 35, who physically attacked victims over the age of 65 in the commission of thefts, Edwards said.

Roberts was indicted on two counts of robbery by force. Because he chose people more than 65 years old, state law would add five years to his sentence if he is found guilty, Edwards added.

"No date has been set for arraignments," the district attorney said. "It will be set later."
