ALBANY -- A woman was pronounced dead shortly after being found next to a Dumpster outside the Whitney Food Mart early Thursday morning, the Albany Police Department reported.
Dispatchers received a call at 5:25 a.m. in reference to an injured person on the 300 block of South McKinley Street. A citizen riding in the area reported seeing a black female on the 700 block of Whitney Avenue.
"Some citizens saw a female lying by a Dumpster," said Phyllis Banks, a spokeswoman for the APD. "They tried to get a response out of her by blowing their (car) horn. When she didn't respond, they called dispatch."
Officers and emergency medical personnel came to the scene. Paramedics began treatment, and the victim, later identified as Gayle Jackson, 45, was transported to an area hospital for further observation. She was pronounced dead shortly afterward.
An initial investigation revealed that Jackson had been fatally shot. Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances of her death, such as where the incident actually took place.
"(The incident) is being considered a homicide," Banks said.
There are currently no suspects in the case.
"(Investigators) are still talking to witnesses who say they heard shots," Banks said. "Right now, we don't have a lot to go on."
There have been nine homicides in the area this year. Of those, three are considered justified shootings.
