Exchange Club Fair returns to Albany

ALBANY -- Fall is here and with it the annual Exchange Club Fair of Southwest Georgia.

Exchange Club of Southwest Georgia President Larry Griffin said the fair will be celebrating its 63rd year this fall.

The fair will hold opening-day ceremonies at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, with the carnival and exhibits opening at 5 p.m. The fair will open at 3 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, at 2 p.m. on Friday and at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

Griffin said fair attendees will appreciate a new element to this year's fair: an extra day of fun.

"We will be open on Sunday this year," he said. "A lot of other fairs in Georgia have done it before with some success, and we decided that it would be nice to do it here."

Griffin said the extra day will give some people who work six days a week a chance to relax and enjoy a day at the fair with their families.

"It's something new that we are doing this year, and we hope people will enjoy the extra time," he said.

Gates open at 1 p.m. on Sunday, and the parking lots open an hour prior to the carnival each day.

Admission to the fair is $5 for adults and free for children under 4 feet tall. School children visiting the fair on Tuesday are eligible for free admission with a valid ID and the donation of a nonperishable food item from 5 p.m.-7 p.m. All-you-can-ride tickets can be purchased for $15 with a coupon from Harvey's Supermarkets or McDonalds.

Parking is free for visitors and $15 for solicitors and delivery trucks.

In addition to the the fair's midway rides and games, a pizza-eating contest will be held at 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday.

"There are plenty of things for people to do and enjoy," said Griffin. "We will have the Hillside Mini Tractor Pull and the demolition derby on Saturday again this year."

Also returning, will be the Buffalo Bill Barfield Show and Eudora's Exotic Petting Zoo.

Griffin said that James E. Strates of the Strates Shows will also be bringing in circus acts to perform at the fair.

Proceeds from the event will benefit 17 Albany nonprofit organizations, including the Liberty House and Salvation Army.
