ALBANY -- Westover's girls soccer team completed a perfect season in the Area 1-AAA race by beating Monroe, 9-0, Wednesday. Westover will be a No. 1 seed when the AAA tournament starts next week.
It felt like a two-for-one day for Westover, which saw Maggie Satterfield, Alison Burson, Sachi Daugherty, and Mika Reid all score twice. Sara Riggins also scored for the Lady Patriots, who finish the season at 11-4 with a perfect 6-0 Area 1-AAA record.
Westover will open the state tournament at home against a fourth-seeded team from Area 4-AAA.
"We're No. 1 in Area 1-AAA,'' Westover coach Terri Satterfield said. "I think the girls were determined from the very first game. This is what they wanted. They wanted the title and to reach the state playoffs.''
Satterfield said her team was especially pumped to play Monroe.
"We were told Monroe was going to beat us,'' she said. "And they (Westover's girls) went extra hard, and they scored seven goals in 18 minutes. When another high school talks smack about you, our girls knew what they wanted to do before they took the field.''
WESTOVER BOYS SOCCER 9, MONROE 1: Danny Brown put the final touches on a memorable season by scoring three goals and delivering two assists for Westover, which finished third in the Area 1-AAA race and will have to travel in the first round of the state playoffs that begin April 30.
Brown ends the regular season with 24 goals. Peter Morton also scored three goals, and Michael Barron and Gavin Parr both scored once and had an assist. Bridger Ferrell also scored for Westover. Westover goalkeeper Cory Walter came out of the net and had a rare assist.
Westover finished the regular season at 8-5 and 4-2 in the Area 1-AAA race.
LEE GIRLS SOCCER: The Lee County girls' second-round area playoff game against Upson-Lee has been re-scheduled from today to 5 p.m. Friday in Leesburg.
